NGC 5139 - Omega Centauri

Omega Centauri

Few telescopic sights can compare to the Omega Centauri globular star cluster. A portion of the estimated one million stars concentrated in this stellar ball is reveled in this image. Visible low on the horizon from mid-northern latitudes in early Spring, Omega Centauri cannot be fully appreciated until it is viewed from the Earth's Southern Hemisphere. Our 6-inch refractor telescope presented the object visually much as it appears here -- thousands of tiny pinpoints of light concentrated into a large, slightly elliptical formation. Views through even larger telescopes are an experience not soon forgotten by the lucky observer.
