Milky Way in Scorpius

Milky Way in Scorpius

Photographed when Scorpius was at the zenith (directly overhead), this image illustrates the vast complex structure of our home galaxy - the Milky Way. Scattered among the great lanes and rifts of dark material are many red hydrogen emission nebulae plus countless stars.

"I am intrigued by the misty appearance of the overall image. Long photographic exposures reveal that there is much of the night sky hidden to the naked eye. Great clouds of fine dust appear like a fog across the galatic equatorial plane, succeeding in blocking our view toward the densley populated stellar regions of the Milky Way. We stood in absolute awe of this great creation". -- John Gleason
