Stars, Gas, and Dust in Cygnus

Cygnus Milky Way

This image is representative of one of the most memorable night skies I have ever seen from the Northern Hemisphere. Sky transparency was a visual 7th magnitude, with the wide expanse of the summer Milky Way riding high overhead, running through the constellation of Cygnus. My observing partner and I were dazzled by the "beach sand" appearance of the millions of faint stars that just lay on the edge of visual perception. The entire sky looked granular. This image, taken with the Pentax 165mm lens, captures much of what I can remember from that amazing night. Visible are many notable objects like the North American Nebula (top), Gamma Cygnus Nebula (center), and the Veil super nova remnant (circle of red nebulae, lower left).
