TARANTULA NEBULA COMPLEX - 30 DORADUS

tarantula

30 Doradus, which is also known as the Tarantula nebula because of its shape, is one of the most facinating gaseous nebulae in the sky. Its size is enormous, and the mass of its luminous gas amounts to half a million solar masses. The cloud seen here has a diameter of 600-700 lightyears, but there are faint, nebulous filaments which reach out to a much larger diameter. Spectroscopic measurements show that 30 Doradus complex is a region of violent motion; this is also our immediate impression when looking at the photo.
